CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Epidemiology Workforce Branch (EWB)'s Epidemiology Competency-based Curriculum (EpiCC) Team within the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), under the Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
EWB provides applied epidemiology training and service programs for future public health professionals and the existing workforce. The branch runs the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) program, the Laboratory Leadership Service (LLS) fellowship, and Student Programs and Partnerships. EIS and LLS are premiere training programs that give health professionals a 2-year, postgraduate stint on the front lines of public health, learning and practicing epidemiology in more than 100 field investigations in the United States and around the world. Student Programs and Partnerships houses the CDC Science Ambassador Fellowship and the Epidemiology Elective Program.
Research Project: This ORISE fellowship is for a curriculum designer opportunity with the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS). EIS is CDC’s globally-recognized 2-year, postgraduate fellowship program and long-standing model of worldwide public health and epidemiology in action. Also known as disease detectives, EIS has trained over 3,900 ready-responders who have served a gamut of public health issues since the program’s inception in 1951. About 10% of EIS training occurs through a rigorous mix of small and large group classroom instruction, case studies, exercises, and e-learning. About 90% of the training is provided through hands-on assignments under the guidance of seasoned mentors and supervisors (usually EIS alumni).
In this fellowship opportunity, the ORISE fellow will train with Epidemiology Competency-based Curriculum leadership and team. The fellowship will provide the ORISE fellow with the opportunity to develop expertise in curriculum development, project management, subject matter expertise in epidemiology, and leadership skills with the branch that is home to several of CDC’s premier fellowships.
During this fellowship, the fellow can expect to train with public health professionals to gain a variety of skills and experience by assisting with and participating in the following:
Learning Objectives: The selected ORISE fellow will have the opportunity to be stationed at CDC, one of the world's most prestigious public health agencies, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. They will have ample opportunity to participate in a wide-range of projects and training opportunities in a Division focused on providing the best opportunities for those interested in careers in public health.
This opportunity is uniquely at the interface between education and public health, an area where there is a lot of opportunity to make a big difference.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Winter 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
