CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD) is CDC’s division with a lead role in public health workforce development. As such, DSEPD strives to provide fellowship, internship, and quality training opportunities for the current and future public health workforce to ensure they have foundational public health skills (e.g., epidemiology and surveillance) and contemporary skills (e.g., informatics and use of evolving technology) to practice in a changing environment. DSEPD is committed to advancing the public health workforce through leadership, evidence-based programs, and partnerships to achieve the vision of a public health workforce prepared to meet emerging and future challenges. 

The Education and Training Services Branch (ETSB) is one of three branches in DSEPD. ETSB helps CDC programs and partners get quality, accredited educational activities to the public health workforce. ETSB designs, accredits, promotes, and delivers learning opportunities for health professionals to improve health.

Research Project: The Learning Design and Fellowship Education Team within ETSB develops competency-based fellowship curricula and builds capacity to create and deliver quality trainings that enhance the skills of the public health workforce. Our team helps design curriculum to support experiential learning for several fellowship programs in the division.

The fellow may collaborate with the team to:

  • draft and update training documents, activities, or standard operating procedures to streamline processes. For example, the fellow may collaborate with fellowship educators to update files, slides, or curriculum planning documents for training events.
  • identify and organize key resources to inform training and curriculum content. For example, the fellow may conduct literature reviews and curate quality educational tools and resources and organize them in an easy to access repository.
  • coordinate activities that support cross-cutting initiatives. For example, the fellow may compile data from several fellowship programs and update a crosswalk of leadership training needs, competencies, and content.
  • support team members in planning, implementation, and evaluation of learning design and fellowship education projects. For example, the fellow may review fellowship instructional materials and provide suggestions to ensure content is engaging and follows the CDC Quality Training Standards.
  • participate in cross-division collaborative efforts to improve the quality of training developed at CDC. For example, the fellow may help facilitate events that bring together partners across the division or agency to discuss quality training for fellowships including topics such as leadership, health equity, diversity and inclusion, and data science.

Learning Objectives: The Fellow will participate in projects and activities that support training and learning strategy for division fellowships. They will have the opportunity to build the following public health core competency domains:

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years.

  • Interest in public health education, adult learning principles, and instructional design
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working on programs or projects with multiple components
  • Experience with Microsoft suite of products
  • Excellent organizational skills
