CDC Office and LocationA research opportunity is currently available in the Division of Scientific Education and Professional Development (DSEPD), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Science (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

CDC is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

DSEPD is CDC’s division with a lead role in public health workforce development. As such, DSEPD strives to provide fellowship, internship, and quality training opportunities for the current and future public health workforce to ensure they have foundational public health skills (e.g., epidemiology and surveillance) and contemporary skills (e.g., informatics and use of evolving technology) to practice in a changing environment. DSEPD is committed to advancing the public health workforce through leadership, evidence-based programs, and partnerships to achieve the vision of a public health workforce prepared to meet emerging and future challenges. 

The Education and Training Services Branch (ETSB) is one of three branches in DSEPD. ETSB helps CDC programs and partners get quality, accredited educational activities to the public health workforce. ETSB designs, accredits, promotes, and delivers learning opportunities for health professionals to improve health.

Research Project: 

  • Quality Training Standards: In January 2018, education leaders from across the CDC finalized eight training development standards to serve as a quality benchmark for trainings developed or funded by CDC. The standards provide guidance for developing quality training that results in learning. A workgroup of training leaders from across CDC was formed to develop the standards and has continued to meet and advise on implementation of these standards across CDC and with external partners. The group officially became a CDC Council in March 2021, with the goal of advising and supporting the DSEPD Education and Training Services Branch’s work to share, implement, and support the standards. This project involves a variety of learning opportunities that include, but are not limited to, communication strategy, program evaluation, learning design and development, web content development, group facilitation, and partner engagement/collaboration. A significant portion of this project will involve organizing the many tasks that are part of this initiative and connecting and communicating with the various partners involved.
  • National Training Partner Engagement: Education and Training Services Branch leadership meet regularly with a variety of training partners focused on public health workforce development. These partners include, but are not limited to, the Association for State and Territorial Health Officials, National Association for City and County Health Officials, National Network for Public Health Institutes, the Public Health Foundation, and the de Beaumont Foundation. Partnership efforts overlap with the policy and communication streams at CDC and there is a need for coordinating with these groups. In addition, successful partnership engagement involves follow-up and continuous care and feeding. With guidance from the mentor, this project involves participating in these meetings, facilitating follow-up, strategizing approach to improve engagement, coordinating sharing of partnership efforts with internal partners, and exploring opportunities for active collaboration with partners beyond meetings. The fellow will learn how to organize and facilitate collaboration and build successful partnerships for common goals.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this fellowship, the participant will be able to

  • Define the CDC Quality Training Standards.
  • Facilitate group discussions among partners to achieve common agendas.
  • Synthesize information for decision-making.
  • Develop an evaluation plan.
  • Design communication materials/products.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: As soon as a qualified candidate is identified.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
