Description

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) History Office (HO) provides research, analysis, and written products to the leadership of AFRL and higher United States Air Force and United States Space Force offices. This encompasses studies of a period of more than 100 years and an extensive breadth of scientific and technical activities. To provide a substantive share of the documentary resources required to fulfill this mission, AFRL/HO must possess and utilize an extended array of archival records. These records must be accessioned, processed and be made available to the AFRL/HO historians in digital format. AFRL/HO is offering a Master's-level fellowship within this area.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers to support the mission of the AFRL/HO. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to the following opportunities:

  • Develop an in-depth familiarity of the AFRL Science and Technology (S&T) environment.
  • Process large, complex history of S&T collections according to academic archival standards.
  • Advise whether historical materials are in proper condition, free of mold, etc.
  • Examine whether materials have potential historical significance and relevance for inclusion into the AFRL Archives.
  • Apply academic archival methods of appraisal of historical assistance.
  • Preserve archival collections according to academic archival standards.
  • Exhibit knowledge and expertise on archival descriptive standards, intellectual property rights, and issues related to digital conversion of archival materials.
  • Provide bibliographies, and professional historical and archival reference and research assistance.
  • Extract information from AFRL databases and those of universities, other national laboratories, and industry.
  • Advise at an academic archival level on issues related to metadata creation guidelines.
  • Create professional grade bibliographies.

Where will I be located?
