The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center (CCDC-SC) is located at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research Center in Natick, Massachusets, under the Army Futures Command. Stretching back to 1954, the CCDC Soldier Center's history of support for the Soldier has continued uninterrupted for more than six decades, with a focus on Soldier-related research, development and testing and evaluation efforts. Made up of a diverse workforce comprised of scientists, engineers, technologists and equipment designers, the CCDC Soldier Center provides a wide range of capabilities to the Soldier, to include field feeding and life support systems, clothing, precision airdrop systems, and ballistic, chemical and laser-protection systems. CCDC-SC also supports Soldier-related research, development, testing and evaluation efforts. CCDC-SC’s highly skilled team of scientist perform a variety of research that includes, Soldier's uniforms, meals ready to eat (MREs), tents, sleeping bags, to parachutes and airdrop capabilities. If the Soldiers wear it, eat it, sleep under it, or have it airdropped to them, the product research and development can be traced back to the mission of CCDC-SC.

As CCDC-SC ORISE participant, you will take part in performing standard ELISA (antibody-based immunoassay) and subsequently utilizing new automated high throughput assays for CCDC - Soldier Center's flagship program, the Measuring and Advancing Soldier Tactical Readiness and Effectiveness (MASTRE) program. Under the guidance of a mentor you will gain hands-on experience in establishing standard clinical chemistry protocols of biofluids, and third party partnerships for other clinical chemistries and 'omics analysis.

This learning experience will provide you with an opportunity to collaborate with the Biological Sciences and Technology Team (BSTT) within the Soldier Performance Optimization Directorate to expand biorepository capabilities and biomarker discovery to support fast-growing human research efforts at CCDC-Soldier Center. In addition, you will expand your knowledge in biosample analysis for several ongoing ex vivo and human studies as well as several expected laboratory-based, and field based human studies to support cognitive and physical human performance enhancement.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by CCDC Soldier Center. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Preferred education and skills are as follows:

Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, or Clinical Chemistry with experience in participating in handling and analyzing biosamples from human clinical studies.  Experience with immunological, biochemical and molecular biology assays, including ELISA, protein quantification, cytokine analysis, Western blotting, PCR-based techniques. Experience with assay development, including reagent development, assay protocol optimization, assay automation, troubleshooting and statistical methods. Hands-on experience with handling, storage, inventory management, and analysis of clinical biosamples (saliva, sweat, urine, blood).
