USFS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS), Pacific Northwest Research Station in Wenatchee (WA), Olympia (WA), Corvallis (OR), or LaGrande (OR); telework possible.

The mission of the Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station is to generate and communicate impartial knowledge to help people understand and make informed choices about natural resource management and sustainability.
Research Project: This research project will look at methods for improving the inclusion of disturbance into forest carbon models in the Pacific Northwest. The participant will summarize current carbon modeling methods for incorporation of disturbance, research improvements for addressing disturbances in forest carbon projections, and engage with a diverse group of interested parties on issues around sequestration of carbon in western forests.
Learning Objectives: Learning opportunities for the participant include increased understanding of forest carbon accounting, disturbance and management interactions, and forest modeling methods. The participant will gain experience in sharing results through the development of publications and presentations.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer 2022, or as soon as a qualified candidate is identified. Start date is flexible and negotiable, and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be extended upon recommendation of USFS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend ranging from $5,200-$5,500, commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USFS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, USFS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
