Description

A Computational Biologist Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agriculture Research Service (ARS) Crop Improvement and Genetics Research Unit in Albany, CA.

The position is within the GrainGenes digital platform, providing long-term data sustainability for small grains data. As part of a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary team, the selected candidate will use his/her background and passion in computational biology to integrate, visualize, and analyze genomic data and to develop/implement web-based tools. 

The appointment is full-time for 12 months and may be renewed based upon recommendation of the ARS and availability of funding.  The selected applicant will receive a stipend in an amount up to $72,303 as support for their living and other expenses during this appointment. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance.  Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The participant will also be awarded a health insurance stipend supplement up to $14,723 per year, a relocation allowance up to $5,000, and a science and research travel allowance up to $4,000 per year.

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, USDA, ARS, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-appointment check and a full background investigation.

Qualifications

To be eligible, applicants must have a doctorate in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline in the biological or physical sciences, preferably within five years of desired starting date.

Preferred skills include:

  • Demonstrated experience with genomic data formatting, analysis, and visualization,
  • Demonstrated experience with implementing/developing web-based tools,
  • Demonstrated experience with command-line environment,
  • A publication record,
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, while building and nurturing collaborations with external research groups, and
  • Ability to disseminate research findings and keeping team members and collaborators informed
