A fellowship opportunity is available in the the Division of High-Consequence Pathogens and Pathology (DCHPP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
DCHPP maximizes public health and safety nationally and internationally through the diagnosis, prevention, and control of disease, disability, and death caused by suspected and known viral, bacterial, prion, and related infections. The purpose of this project is to provide professional scientific laboratory training for the CHAMPS Network. This includes helping to gather better data, faster, about how, where and why children are getting sick and dying. This data will help the global health community get the right interventions to the right children in the right place to save lives. More specifically, this project will provide experience in Infectious Diseases Pathology Brach (IDPB) Histology and Molecular laboratories, in coordinating communications with CHAMPS sites, and in facilitating data collection of pathologic specimen submission and results reporting on suspect virus cases.
Activities may include:
- Receive and accession cases
- Receive and sumarize clinical data, lab data, and VA data and enter into IDPB master files
- Communicate with CHAMPS office/sites regarding data that is not received according to timeline
- Attend histopathology review sessions and provide case data
- Update IDPB master files with histopathology findings and results of lab testing
- Track cases to help meet IDPB deadlines
- Analyze IDPB CHAMPS data and help prepare and present at CHAMPS meetings. Determine correlates of findings based on age, pathologic finding, clinical data, pathogen identified, correlation between TAC, lab data and IDPB test results.
- Correlate IDPB findings with overall DECODE panel results
- Slide scanning for telepathology
- Assist pathologists as needed in photomicrography sessions
- Attend telepathology sessions and update IDPB master files
- Correlate telepathology interpretations with IDPB in-house slide interpretations
- Prepare summaries of ‘teaching points’ from individual cases for sites
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
