A Veterinary Medical Officer research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. The selected applicant's primary responsibility will be conducting research on swine enteric coronaviruses (e.g., porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, and swine deltacoronavirus) which will include development and adaptation of animal models and laboratory assays for use in studying the pathogenesis, ecology, vaccinology, and protective immune response of these viruses in swine. Activities will include the experimental inoculation of swine with coronaviruses, collection of ante- and postmortem samples, analysis of macro- and microscopic lesions, testing samples for viruses, culture and propagation of viruses, and the use of molecular techniques to characterize coronaviruses.
The appointment is full-time for one year and may be renewed upon the recommendation of the ARS and the availability of funding. The annual stipend will range from $61,000 - $71,000 and will be commensurate with experience. A stipend supplement in the amount of $12,000 is also provided to offset the cost of an individual or family health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Funding in the amount of $3,000 is available to reimburse travel-related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
