A Postdoctoral Research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center (USDFRC) in Madison, Wisconsin. The selected applicant will conduct research to understand the chemical/biochemical interaction of o-quinones with proteins to determine binding specificities, potential for protein cross-linking, and the ultimate impact upon protein utilization by ruminants. Activities will include protein isolation and purification, enzyme characterization (PPO, proteolytic enzymes), protein degradation, and analysis of degradation products.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon the recommendation of ARS and the availability of funding. The stipend rate for this appointment is $49,000. A stipend supplement in the amount of $1,500 is available to offset the cost of a health insurance plan. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health insurance may be obtained through ORAU/ORISE. A travel allowance in the amount of $2,500 is available to reimburse travel related expenses to scientific and professional development activities. The participant does not become an employee of ARS or ORISE.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with ARS, this position requires a pre-employment check and full background investigation.

To be eligible, applicants must have received a doctorate degree in Plant Science, Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry or a related field within five years of the desired starting date. The length of time from graduation can be variable to ensure an adequate pool of candidates.
Candidates should be highly motivated individuals dedicated to working in an interdisciplinary environment which includes physiology, molecular biology and chemistry of plant feedstuffs in rumen nutrition. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience and proficiency in analytical methods (enzyme assays, amino acid analysis, etc.). Experience with analytical tools including, but not limited to, HPLC, LC-MS, gel electrophoresis, NMR, and amino acid analysis is important. Experience in acquisition and interpretation of data from NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry is preferred. The selected applicant will possess strong English verbal and writing skills.
