Post-Master's Research Associate- Physical/Biological Sciences
The Biology and Soft Matter Division (BSMD) invites applications for a M.Sc. Chemist/Biochemist to join the Biology and Soft Matter Division in the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team of biochemists and biophysicists at ORNL investigating the properties of terpenes for the production of advanced biofuels. He/she will be responsible for isolation and characterization of terpenes for neutron scattering studies, and will develop efficient isolation protocols for extraction and purification of different classes of terpenes from the oil glands of Eucalyptus leaves. The candidate will be expected to serve as a technical specialist in supporting the day-to-day operations in the laboratory and ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements. We expect the successful candidate will provide drafts of manuscripts and reports as required.
A M.Sc. degree in the Physical or Biological sciences (Chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, etc.) is required. The successful candidate will have previous experience using characterization and extraction techniques, including high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff at all levels within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Associates Program and is administered by ORAU through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The program is open to all qualified U.S. and non-U.S. citizens without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran or disabled veteran
