Description

A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Quality and Sustainability Office (QSO) in the Office of the Director (OD) within the Office of Safety, Security and Asset Management (OSSAM) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Enduring, resilient facilities and operations are necessary to support CDC as it ensures the preparedness, safety, and security of staff, as well as the ability to fulfill the CDC mission. CDC promotes the many long-term health aspects of sustainability and engages staff to promote a culture of continuous quality improvement that advances environmental stewardship through partnership and innovation. Under mentor guidance, this fellowship will focus on learning how to bridge the gap between public health and sustainability management principles.

The fellow selected will have the learning opportunity to participate in the following activities: 

  A.  Assist in the development of agency-wide climate resilience strategy analysis for implementation in campus facilities and operations.

  • Conduct research and documentation of best practices in resilience planning and preparedness for comparison and applicability to CDC operations.

  • Work with CDC staff to engage stakeholders in the understanding of potential requirements and obstacles relating to resilience planning initiatives at CDC.

  • Identify health related benefits and community health system cost benefits to increased climate resiliency as a part of the analysis, including probable climate change scenarios and regional climate data in order to identify the benefits of resilience planning for CDC.

  • Shadow meeting coordination and assist in the creation and distribution of notes and action items to stakeholders.

  • Summarize findings in comprehensive reports, executive summaries and presentations to office leadership.

B.  Participate in effective sustainability outreach and support CDC communications assignments.

  • Participate in developing, promoting, coordinating and improving CDC Go Green, Get Healthy projects, programs, activities and opportunities that target appropriate audiences.

  • Assist in developing, writing, designing and disseminating print and other Go Green, Get Healthy communications such as posters, fliers, informational packets, project summaries, periodic status reports, sustainability feature articles, internet content, tweets, and internal CDC articles.

  • Coordinate with staff at CDC campuses nationwide to support Campus Green Teams and recruit volunteers as needed to round out team membership.

  • Train regularly with office communications staff and HHS Sustainability Goal Managers to craft messages, distribute information and develop content to support these stakeholders.

  • Observe and train with the CDC Chief Sustainability Officer and other office staff to effectively conduct various sustainability duties and activities.

  • Liaise with responsible offices to promote adoption of Go Green, Get Healthy recommendations.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Sustainability Science, Environmental Science Studies, Health Communications, Environmental Health, Industrial Engineering, Science Writing or a related STEM discipline.

  • Experience in research-based writing assignments.

  • Knowledge of environmental design, green building efforts and climate resilience is desired but not necessary.

  • Ability to appropriately summarize technical information and data in order to present findings to the general population.

  • Ability to synthesize information from a variety of sources, develop conclusions and recommendations and report findings in a conversational manner.

  • Familiarity with utility cost analysis and benchmarking techniques.

  • Experience with conducting internet-based research.

  • Advanced computer skills, especially in MS Access, Excel, and Word.

  • Proficiency with social media platforms (i.e., Twitter).

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a variety of audience types and education levels.
