A fellowship opportunity is availabe in the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia

DLS conducts research and provides laboratory support that improves the detection, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of environmental, tobacco-related, nutritional, newborn, selected chronic and selected infectious diseases. The Tobacco and Volatiles Branch (TVB) supports this through its own mission, which is to produce laboratory science that supports effective regulation to reduce individual and population exposure to addictive and toxic substances from tobacco products and environmental sources.

The training opportunity includes activities such as sample preparation using automated equipment, analysis of samples by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, data processing and analysis using complex software and data evaluation procedures, and presentation of results. Additionally, this fellowship involves training related to data quality and data management. The participant will gain experience with data processing and analysis of sample results. The chosen candidate will train with a team of laboratorians who review and report patient results and support troubleshooting efforts through detailed data analysis. These activities will be performed in compliance with DLS policies and regulations, such as those outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA).

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemistry received within the past five year required
• experience or strong interest in analytical laboratory work, particularly laboratory data review and analysis.
• Undergraduate research laboratory experience.
• Experience creating or reviewing results from ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography- or gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-based methods.
• Demonstrated proficiency using Sciex Analyst, MultiQuant, or other integration software.
• Experience working with and analyzing trends in large datasets

• Basic knowledge of statistical analysis using JMP or SAS.
