A fellowship opportunity is available in the the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Atlanta, Georgia.
DHDSP has a mission to provide public health leadership to improve cardiovascular health for all, reduce the burden and eliminate disparities associated with heart disease and stroke. Priorities for the Division include supporting the Million Hearts™ initiative, reducing the consumption of sodium, and improving the ABCS (Aspirin use for those who need it, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management, and Smoking cessation). The Applied Research and Evaluation Branch (AREB) has broad responsibility for the Division’s evaluation, economics, applied research, and translation activities. AREB has an active portfolio that currently supports more than 40 projects.
The AREB endeavors to:
- Conduct evaluations to expand practice based evidence of public health programs
- Evaluate DHDSP funded initiatives and programs, including 7 current FOAs and Million Hearts™
- Provide scientific support and key translation products for the Division’s funded programs
- Increase the engagement of community health workers and other nontraditional providers in community and clinical practices
- Provide technical assistance to grantees of DHDSP- funded programs.
- Conduct systematic reviews on key topics
- Facilitate the integration of public health and health care in the area of cardiovascular health
ORISE fellows will support a team that is conducting evaluations of DHDSP funded programs and initiatives, provide evaluation support to grantees and partners, conduct evaluation studies, and develop evaluation resources and tools.
The fellow will gain experience by:
- Supporting the evaluation work of the Division
- Providing evaluation technical assistance to grantees
- Aiding in the rigorous evaluation of field-based projects
- Co-analyzing Division initiatives such as Million Hearts®, the Sodium Reduction in Communities Program, the Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program, WISEWOMAN, State Public Health Actions, State and Local Public Health Actions, Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country, and/or the Mississippi Delta Health Collaborative
The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
A bachelor’s degree or graduate degree in public health, allied sciences, health sciences or in a related field within five years of the start date of the appointment, or expect to complete all requirements for such a degree prior to starting the fellowship.
A candidate should have program evaluation experience and skills, including experience quantifying clinical and public health program improvement.
