Description

A fellowship opportunity is available to support the Education and Information Division (EID) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The participant will be training in occupational safety and health outreach to Spanish-speaking and other vulnerable worker populations.  The participant will have opportunities to interact with and learn from a multidisciplinary research team and experience firsthand the building of conceptual bridges between theory and application in the behavioral and social sciences.  There will be opportunities to learn about mixed method and participatory research approaches.  The participant will have opportunities to learn about the development and design of questionnaires and/or surveys, as well as facilitator guides for use in focus group and/or key informant interviews.  The participant will observe the collection and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, summarization of findings and generation of recommendations.  There will be opportunities for presentation of findings to fellow students and NIOSH researchers.

**Length of Appointment:  2 months **

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for two (2) months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications
  • Applicants must be a recent graduate or be currently enrolled as a graduate student, with training at the master’s level or beyond, at an accredited U.S. college or university in a behavioral or social sciences field including psychology, sociology, anthropology or other closely related disciplines.

  • Course work and/or research experience in occupational health psychology, vocational psychology, medical anthropology, statistics and data analysis are preferred.

  • Experience using statistical computing software such as Excel, SAS and/or SPSS would be useful.  In addition, some Spanish-language skills would be useful.
