Description

A fellowship opportunity is available to support the Division of Applied Research and Technology (DART) within the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The ORISE participant will have the opportunity to gain experience in health communication at a Federal agency that conducts occupational safety and health research. Additionally, he/she will be able to train on projects that will improve the overall communication of several occupational safety and health research programs including health communication as it relates to the workplace use of hazardous drugs, the prevention of occupational hearing loss, and the prevention of exposure to hazardous silica dust which will occur under the tutelage and direction of an assigned Advisor/Mentor. Specific activities may result in the publication of social media, press releases, or websites. The training program will focus on communicating occupational safety and health research findings to audiences including NIOSH stakeholders, NIOSH partners, and workers.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for 4 months but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The desired start date is April 29, 2018.  The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area. Participants do not become employees of the CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

Qualifications
  • The candidate should possess or be working towards a four year degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, and/or Communication (Public Relations, Health Communication or equivalent).

  • Experience in written communications, social media posts, and Microsoft Office Products preferred.
