Description

A research opportunity is available within the Center for Global Health’s (CGH) Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA.

The ORISE participant will have the opportunity to gain experience in a research laboratory environment via training in detection and analysis of biological markers of vaccine protection and pathogen exposure for use in integrated public health surveillance.

The Research Participant will have the opportunity to be involved in the follwing activities:

  • Training on a validated multiplex bead assay for detection of antibodies against vaccine preventable diseases, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, arboviruses and water-borne diseases based on Luminex technology.  This will include coordinating data collection for studies involving multiple disease targets, collecting data, organizing and analyzing results. There will also be training in developing serological assays, recombinant protein techniques, and basic statistical analysis methods.
  • Coordinating studies involving multiple disease targets, collecting data, organizing and analyzing results.
  • Learning about and supporting staff in optimizing and validating detection for new disease targets and new assay formats.

The fellow will be mentored and supervised by an experienced microbiologists

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

This Research Participation Program opportunity appointment is from 5/17/18-5/16/19. 

Qualifications

 Masters degree in Public Health, Immunology, Biology, Microbiology, or Infectious Diseases and Zoonoses in the last 5 years.

  • 2 years of classroom practice in immunology or microbiology required.
  • Specific laboratory training with immunodiagnosis or serologic test development preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and bio-safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of databases.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Practice in immune assay performance, including but not limited to multiplex bead assays and ELISA.
  • Knowledge of laboratory method validation.
  • Ability to write scientific reports.
  • Ability to support scientific research protocol development.
