A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch (EDEB of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch (EDEB) works with state and local health departments and other federal agencies to conduct surveillance for bacterial enteric diseases and related antimicrobial resistance occurring in the United States. Pathogens that EDEB staff members track include Clostridium botulinum, Campylobacter, Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio, and Yersinia. EDEB staff routinely collect and analyze surveillance data, publish and present findings, and collaborate with partners to improve the branch’s nine surveillance systems. EDEB is organized into five teams: Analytics, the Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet), the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), the National Surveillance of Bacterial Foodborne Illnesses (NST), and the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS).
NARMS is an interagency partnership among CDC, the US Food and Drug Administration, the US Department of Agriculture, and state and local health departments. CDC NARMS monitors antimicrobial resistance among enteric bacteria isolated from humans.
The surveillance epidemiologist fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
• Serving as a liaison between the Outbreak Response and Prevention Branch and state health departments regarding outbreak isolate submission to NARMS
• Assisting with data management of outbreaks caused by antimicrobial resistant pathogens
• Routine linking of NARMS data to other enteric surveillance systems
• Maintenance of the NARMS database through data entry, validation, and cleaning
• Analysis of NARMS data for individual and collaborative projects
• Preparation of NARMS annual and integrated reports
• Responding to data requests and inquiries related to NARMS data
• Providing guidance to IT staff regarding surveillance elements and beta-testing of the NARMS database
• Assisting with preparation of funding materials for the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases Cooperative Agreement and reviewing applications from 54 sites
• Developing website and communication material related to antimicrobial resistance
• Serving as the NARMS representative to several working groups that involve various teams in the division and/or NARMS federal partners
• Other responsibilities as assigned, such as collaborations with other EDEB teams, assisting with CDC outbreak response as needed, and phone duty
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment could be part-time (minimum of 15 hours/week) or full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
The candidate should be a recent Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate in the field of epidemiology within the last 5 years.
