The Policy and Partnerships Team within CDC’s Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention (DUIP) is currently seeking to fill a vacancy for an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellow.
The Fellow will serve in a training capacity in the policy office to support DUIP’s efforts across the following priority topic areas: opioid overdose prevention, traumatic brain injury, motor vehicle injuries, and falls among older adults. Specifically, the Fellow will gain experience in tasks such as:
1) responding to state technical assistance requests,
2) responding to internal CDC and HHS leadership requests,
3) translation of materials for the general public including editing and drafting original material,
4) developing resources or products for a variety of audiences, including state-based injury programs policy partners, and key stakeholders,
5) Identifying state level best-practices and develop or review content for partner listserv and other communications and partnership products,
6) Consulting with CDC subject matter experts and state partners in identifying topic specific prevention efforts for assessment and promotion, and
7) other activities that are relevant to the policy and partnership team.
Desirable skills for the fellow include:
1) Self-motivated and able to complete tasks independently
2) Strong writing skills
3) Excellent oral skills
4) Ability to synthesize research and public information quickly and concisely
5) Ability to interpret statistical data commonly used in public health.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Ideally, the applicant should be a Masters-level candidate in public health, public policy, or social sciences who is interested in unintentional injury prevention.
