A postgraduate research project training opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW). The appointment will be served in the Health and Ecological Criteria Division (HECD) in the Office of Science and Technology (OST) in Washington, D.C.
The Office of Water (OW) ensures drinking water is safe, and restores and maintains oceans, watersheds, and their aquatic ecosystems to protect human health, support economic and recreational activities, and provide healthy habitats for fish, plants and wildlife. Among other activities, OW is responsible for implementing the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act. The OST provides ecological and human health science support for decisions and policies that implement the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and a variety of other water related statutory programs that protect water quality, aquatic life and human health.
This training opportunity will provide the participant the opportunity to learn about the discrete science and science policy as it pertains to biosolids management (e.g. probabilistic risk assessment, utilization of data from high throughput screening methods, screening emerging contaminants; etc.) The participant will be trained by a mentor who will introduce them to EPA scientists and leaders in environmental science and policy. Close collaboration with other EPA offices, other Federal agencies and external groups is expected. Under the guidance of the mentor, she/he may be involved in:
Collaborating with scientific experts in the Office of Water and across EPA supporting the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and a variety of other water regulatory programs.
Communicating complex scientific or technical information to a non-technical audience.
Designing and implementing research workshops, webinars, meetings, and outreach both internally to EPA and with federal partners.
Development and use of risk assessment methods for biosolids.
Attending meetings and conferences regarding water quality and biosolids.
Becoming familiar with water quality issues; stakeholders and developing water-related research/practitioner skills.
Developing outreach and communication materials for OW website, including white papers, brochures and blog posts.
The participant will have the opportunity to attend meetings and conferences regarding biosolids and water quality. Through this project, the intern will develop a sound understanding of the development of supporting science needed for biosolids management for the protection of human health and the environment. They will be exposed to regulatory, policy, technical, and research experiences related to biosolids and water quality.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed for up to three years upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive an annual stipend of $54,792. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.

Applicants must have received a master’s degree in biology, toxicology, environmental science (including: aquatic toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental biology, ecological risk assessment, biogeochemistry, etc.), environmental studies, environmental policy, environmental management or closely related discipline within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
