Once you submit your application, the reference you listed will receive instructions on how to submit on your behalf. It is your responsibility to communicate with your reference to determine if they received instructions on how to submit the online recommendation. Ask them to check their spam folders and be sure to verify that you provided the correct email address. The reference must be submitted by March 9. NFUSS is a six-week course, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), designed to provide undergraduate students with comprehensive, experimental, hands-on training in topics essential to nuclear forensics. This program will be held June 11 to July 20, 2018, at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. Through laboratory experiments and complementary lectures, students are introduced to the practice and technical aspects of nuclear forensic science. The program will also include a field trip to Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Nuclear forensics involves examining materials recovered from radiological and nuclear events of an illicit or hostile nature in order to determine their character and origin. Nuclear forensics conclusions, combined with information from law enforcement investigation and intelligence, help identify those responsible for planned and actual attacks.
The program will cover your tuition, fees, housing, and meals at the University of Utah. You will receive a $5,000 stipend that will be paid on a biweekly schedule during your appointment in the NFUSS program.
In addition, you will receive an allowance to cover travel costs to and from the University of Utah and travel costs for the field trip to ORNL. Selected students will be reimbursed for one round trip domestic travel (if permanent address is more than 50 miles from the University of Utah). Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current federal privately owned vehicle mileage rate. Travel by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare and may include ground transportation and standard baggage fees (limited to two bags).
Field Trip
The 2018 NFUSS will include a field trip to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to provide participants a firsthand view of an operational environment.

I certify that I am currently enrolled full time as a degree-seeking student in a science, mathematics, or engineering program at an accredited four-year U.S. college or university; I have completed at least two years of college-level coursework prior to the start of the NFUSS appointment; I have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; I am at least 18 years of age at time of application; I am a U.S. citizen; I can provide proof of health insurance coverage; and I am available to participate in the full six-week program.
