A project is available in the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects (DEHHE), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The participant will gain experience in the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Effects, Health Studies Branch (HSB) as part of the Disaster Epidemiology and Response Team (DERT). HSB is the response branch for the Center. It is HSB’s mission to reduce the public health impacts of environmental threats by applying our scientific expertise in environmental epidemiology, disaster epidemiology, and medical toxicology. HSB activities are concentrated in four core capabilities: environmental epidemiology, disaster epidemiology, medical toxicology consultation and assistance, and emerging environmental threat discovery and identification. DERT provides expertise and leadership in epidemiology related to natural and human-induced disasters to internal and external partners. DERT’s unique contributions to the preparedness, response, and recovery components of the disaster life cycle include providing State, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) partners with training and technical assistance about the Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) methodology and disaster epidemiology and surveillance. Recommendations based on the results of DERT’s work have been incorporated into public health strategies to prevent or reduce disaster-related morbidity and mortality.
Under the guidance of a collaborative team of epidemiologists on DERT and Branch subject matter experts in other disciplines, the selected participant may:
Support activities within the Disaster Epidemiology Community of Practice (DECoP)
Learn to coordinate and manage a CoP quarterly meetings, including assisting staff with organizing speakers
Learn by using Microsoft Office SharePoint to improve the usability of the DECoP SharePoint site
Gain experience in health communications by developing a newsletter template for DECoP, researching newsletter topics, and writing the newsletter.
Gain knowledge about HSB’s disaster epidemiology tools, templates, and databases by updating current materials (i.e., transferring database templates into EpiInfo 7™), developing new tools and templates, and updating the website.
Gain knowledge about the roles and activities performed during a natural or human-induced disaster response, including providing technical assistance and/or field response to STLT public health.
Learn how CDC builds capacity among our STLT partners by participating in disaster epidemiology training.
Be trained to collect, enter, manage, analyze, and disseminate (e.g., reports, manuscripts, presentations) data from epidemiological assessments (e.g., CASPER) and public health surveillance.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Master’s degree or higher in public health or a related scientific discipline earned within the past five years
Experience in epidemiology, environmental health, or disasters preferred
Familiarity and/or interest in learning about disaster response and public health preparedness preferred
Experience with EpiInfo 7 and SharePoint is beneficial, but not required.
