Three fellowship opportunities at the master's degree level and one at the bachelor's degree level are currently available with the Developmental Disabilities Branch (DDB), Division of Congenital and Developmental Disorders, in the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The opportunities will further the communication, health science, and epidemiological knowledge, skills and abilities of qualified participants.
NCBDDD’s mission is to promote the health of babies, children and adults and to enhance the potential for full, productive living. To achieve this mission, NCBDDD focuses on: identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities; helping children to develop and reach their full potential; and promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities, including autism and developmental disabilities.
Under the direction of senior scientists and project coordinators, participants will train within the Epidemiology and the Surveillance Teams in the analysis of public health data and identification of strategies with the potential to influence constituents’ health care associated with developmental disorders. Participants are assigned to train on various research study projects on congenital and developmental disabilities, and to train in functions related to monitor changes in prevalence and contributing risk factors along with prevention policies and program messages. This training will also provide the participants with opportunities to present study findings in peer-reviewed publications and scientific meetings.
Under the guidance of mentors of the Epidemiology and Surveillance Teams, opportunities may include:
Assisting with the preparation/assembly of research study materials
Reviewing sending/tracking study materials
Performing quality checks on all study forms received from study participants
Assisting in the design and development of study methods including data linkages with vital records and census indicators and compilation of analysis datasets.
Assisting in analysis of data for major publications and analytic strategies for self-initiated publications and presentations.
Assisting in the development of key communication strategies for dissemination of surveillance and epidemiologic study findings.
Assisting in the development and implementation of program evaluation methods.
Assisting in the reporting of program evaluation findings and recommendations.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
