A  fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Partnerships and Evaluation Branch (PEB), Division of Health Informatics and Surveillance (DHIS), Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services (CSELS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The branch mission is to enhance stakeholders’ capacity and public health evidence-based decision making through technical assistance and expertise on evaluation and epidemiology, with a focus on the division's three key initiatives: Data Hub, National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP), and National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS). The branch goals are: 1) to enhance timely and active participation to national programs by providing support to state and local government agencies, and engaging with different stakeholders and community partners; 2) to increase program performance and effectiveness by providing evaluation knowledge and implementing evaluation projects/activities; 3) to enhance the access to and use of different acquired data sources through science driven coordination and team activities; 4) to increase the number of team projects through epidemiology/science driven partnership across teams within and outside PEB. 

PEB is the lead branch in providing enhanced and scientific partnership including knowledge translation and exchange, which offers a unique environment to the fellow who will also have the chance to be actively engaged in epidemiology activities and studies, program evaluation, and scientific writing. 

The fellow may have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:

Use of the external acquired data sources through Data Hub to inform NSSP and other programs' related efforts

• Coordinating the analytical process and plan including but it is not limited to keeping records of time and responsibilities and assuring the co-authors stay focused and meet the timelines

• Developing research and epidemiology studies related to the use of different acquired data sources

• Creating presentations and publication agendas, timelines included

• Using visualization tools to display the study findings

• Coordinating meetings with the NSSP and other programs focused on translating the analyses findings into actions

• Supporting NSSP evaluating through the use of other external data sources

Coordination of all collaborative projects through epidemiology/science driven partnerships across teams within and outside PEB

• Supporting branch leadership including the team leads to set a clear agenda for this goal. That includes seeking input and providing feedback/updates on a regular basis and as established with the branch chief as direct supervisor

• Creating a scientific plan with timelines that will be also shared with the branch staff

• Monitoring the implementation of the activities included in the plan to assure that any unforeseen issues are identified and addressed in time

• Attending all branch meetings and any other meetings as appropriate/assigned by the direct supervisor

• Providing technical assistance on issues that fall under the fellow’s expertise

Monitoring the implementation of Data Hub roadmap activities

In 2015, PEB was assigned to lead the development of the new Data Hub roadmap throughout the division. The activities are being implemented and monitoring the process is needed in order to identify and address any unforeseen issues/barriers as well as to plan for the next steps.

• Updating the Data Hub roadmap

• Scheduling meetings with assigned staff that will conduct different activities as needed/appropriate for updating the roadmap document.

• Attending different meetings related to the Data Hub roadmap activities as appropriate/assigned by the branch chief as direct supervisor

• Working closely with the branch chief and providing support on organizing and managing the Data Hub Oversight Committee meetings

• Providing scientific assistance to the Data Hub communities of practice

Provision of assistance to other branch projects

• Conducting literature reviews on priority topics

• Providing epidemiology knowledge to project officers and team leads as appropriate

• Assisting the teams, as necessary and appropriate, in their efforts related to evaluating programs and surveillance systems

• Serving as branch liaison at meetings related to data use, research and epidemiology

• Participating in different webinars and attending meetings as recommended by his/her supervisor

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

• Master's degree in public health or related field earned within the past five years. 
• Training and knowledge in computer science or epidemiology are preferred
• Knowledge of SAS, R, R-shiny and other visualization tools is preferred
