Description

A postgraduate research training opportunity is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL). This appointment will be served with the Air and Energy Management Division (AEMD) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

This research opportunity is focused on emissions characterizations from stationary and mobile sources with an emphasis on coal-fired utilities and diesel generators. In addition to emissions characterizations from large-scale sources, this research will involve validating, modifying, and applying methods to assess experimental endpoints. The ability to understand aerosols, combustion, measurement technologies, coupled with the ability to operate many instruments (including data reduction and analysis), will be a key part of the participants research activities. Collaboration with a larger team is anticipated.

To a lesser extent, this opportunity will also involve collaborating with partners and stakeholders internal and external to EPA to broaden the understanding of these emissions and their impacts. The participant will have the opportunity to publish and present our findings to many research communities and at conferences and through presentations within EPA.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences and stakeholder venues. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.

The mentor for this project is Tiffany L. B. Yelverton (yelverton.tiffany@epa.gov). The desired start date for this appointment is November 1, 2017.

Qualifications

Applicants must have received a bachelor's or master’s degree in environmental sciences, engineering and/or policy or a closely related field within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Hands-on experience (in a laboratory setting) with aerosol instrumentation, acquired either during their degree program or through job-related experience post-graduation is desired.
