Description

The EPA Environmental Research and Business Support Program has an immediate opening for a Data Analyst position with the Office of Research and Development at the EPA facility in Cincinnati, OH.

The Office of Research and Development at the EPA supports research to improve the scientific basis for decisions on national environmental issues and help EPA achieve its environmental goals. Research is conducted in a broad range of environmental areas by scientists in EPA laboratories and at universities across the country.

The Sustainable Technology Division (STD) of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) within The Office of Research and Development (ORD) at EPA develops and designs technologies and methodologies that provide sustainable solutions to environmental problems.  The Division also creates and advances new ideas that propagate throughout ORD’s national research programs.  

The selected candidate shall assist researchers in the Life Cycle Assessment Center for Excellence in preparation and analysis of large datasets (100,000+ records) for use in life cycle assessment. He/she will have the opportunity to work with experienced scientists and engineers on multiple projects in a fast-growing area of environmental research.

Research and Administrative responsibilities shall include:

  • Retrieving  datasets  in  various  formats  and  importing  into  Python  or  R  programming environments and relational databases (e.g. MySQL, MS Access),
  • Writing scripts to process data including those that perform data import, sorting, grouping, filtering, transforming, and exporting data into text files,
  • Creating schemas, queries and exporting data using SQL or graphical interfaces to a SQL database,
  • Creating tabular data summaries that can be viewed in Excel,
  • Visualizing data using graphs and tables,
  • Validating data,
  • Reviewing data for outliers,
  • Performing simple statistical summaries,
  • Merging various datasets, and
  • Organizing and documenting data and analysis products.

Communications-related responsibilities will include:

  • Communicating effectively and respectfully with researchers on data analysis tasks assigned,
  • Regularly reporting to mentor or other team members on progress, and
  • Participating in team meetings and verbally communicating progress.

Location: This job will be located at EPA’s facility in Cincinnati, OH.

Salary: The selected applicant will become a full time temporary employee of ORAU and will receive an hourly wage of $17.84 for hours worked.

Hours: Full Time.

Travel: No travel will be required.

Working Conditions: This position will involve work in an administrative setting and is not expected to involve exposure to hazardous elements.

The selected candidate shall be supervised by a mentor who will provide day-to-day direction, as well as coach, advise and counsel the selected candidate, and review his/her work.

Expected Start Date: The position start date is May 2017. The selected applicant will be temporary employees of ORAU working as a contractor to EPA. The initial contract period is through May 14, 2018. EPA may elect to renew the contract for an additional two (2) 12-month optional periods.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age and
  • Have two or more years of college education in any field where quantitative data analysis is used, from an accredited university or college within the last 24 months and
  • Be a citizen of the United States of America or a Legal Permanent Resident.

EPA ORD employees, their spouses, and children are not eligible to participate in this program.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

Successful candidates shall have:

  • One semester minimum experience programming in the R and/or Python languages,
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel including import/export of data and use of pivot tables,
  • Experience with relational databases, and
  • Strong written, oral and electronic communication skills.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, Work Experience, and Education

It is desirable for the candidates to have:

  • Experience analyzing data from the sciences or engineering, and
  • Experience with statistical analysis, variability and uncertainty analysis.
