Description

The Savannah River National Laboratory’s Analytical Development Section seeks early-career scientists and engineers to support our analytical services and conduct research and development in our Radiochemistry and Nuclear Measurements Laboratories. Currently, we offer a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, in which the successful candidate would provide expertise in one or more of these three key areas:

1. Conduct neutron- and gamma-based non-destructive assays and modeling of various materials, and provide technical support for Savannah River Site’s Safeguard/Criticality applications;

2. Support a wide customer base by conducting novel and routine radiochemical separations and/or nuclear measurements on various sample matrices containing a wide range (environmental to high dose)of radioactivity; and

3. Provide expertise in nuclear measurement research and development to support the needs of various government agencies, including several offices within the U.S. Department of Energy.

Location: This job will be located at Savannah River National Laboratory, Aiken, SC.

Compensation: Competitive salary with benefits.

Hours: Full-Time

Expected Start Date: The position is full-time and expected to begin in July  2017. The selected candidate will be a temporary employee of ORAU working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at SRNL. • Be capable of obtaining a security clearance.

Successful candidates will:

  • Initiate proposals to apply radiochemical and nuclear measurement techniques to diverse sample matrices found in the Department of Energy complex, and develop and apply technical experience at SRNL and elsewhere to resolve complex problems;
  • Establish excellent technical credibility: this would involve meeting department missions and goals, as evidenced by issuing reports, making presentations, preparing peer-reviewed technical articles and patents, and /or being involved in national technical organizations;
  • Mentor less senior professionals, as a means of transferring technical knowledge and insight; and
  • Possess research or work-related experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Laboratory gamma, alpha, and beta spectroscopy, plus expertise in spectroscopic data analysis
    • Field measurements of gamma radiation and/or neutrons
    • Radioactive material handling
    • Radiochemical separations
    • Configuration of nuclear measurements systems
    • Radiation transport code modeling (i.e., MCNP, Microshield, etc.)
