A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Physical Activity and Health Branch (PAHB) within the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO) in the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

DNPAO’s Physical Activity and Health Branch supports population based approaches for active living to reduce population burden of chronic disease and improve and enhance health and the quality of life.  To meet this goal, the Branch conducts surveillance and epidemiologic research, translation and evaluation activities on topics such as transportation and community design planning and promoting increased physical activity in various key venues.  The Branch is dedicated to understanding and promoting physical activity, especially walking.

This fellowship will provide experience in DNPAO’s approach to promoting physical activity through the development of the updated 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, while being a team participant with a diverse group of public health professionals, including epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, and evaluation specialists. The selected participant will help research, synthesize and translate the evidence on social, environmental and policy strategies related to the process of updating the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.

Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities may include:

• Assisting with research for updating national guidelines

• Organizing reviews and generating reports

• Assisting with data analysis and manuscript development

• Developing and delivering presentations to internal and external partners

• Synthesizing research and practice-based literature

• Participating in ongoing projects related to physical activity and community design assessments, measurements and indicators

• Assisting in designing research projects that assess the impact of walking

• Assist in developing business case studies demonstrating the financial impact of implementing physical activity strategies in various settings

• Communicating with state and national partners and participating on national partnership groups

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.

• A Master’s degree in public health with preferred emphasis in epidemiology received within the last five years.
• Strong technical writing/scientific writing skills.

The following are beneficial, but not required.

• Familiarity with policy and/or environmental change strategies that address physical activity
• Experience working in physical activity and/or obesity, or experience working in transportation/community design or other relevant industries

Knowledge of analytical techniques, data analysis skills.
