A postgraduate research training opportunity is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW). This appointment will be served with the Office of Wastewater Management (OWM), Water Permit Division, in Washington, DC. EPA’s Office of Water is actively engaged in implementing a national regulatory program and the non-regulatory elements such as technical assistance and outreach, to support it.
The Rural Branch in the Water Permit Division is looking for an intern interested in being trained in NPDES permitting, specifically in the areas of pesticides, forest roads and animal feeding operations, and other areas.
The intern will be trained in the various components of the NPDES permit program; including gathering and analyzing data, drafting and reviewing technical documents and reports, and will interact with national experts on tough issues related to permitting for pollution and analyzing the current status of how states are implementing NPDES regulations. The intern will also be trained in assessing technologies and practices associated with nutrient recovery and other types of pollution prevention and abatement, as well as climate resilience and mitigation.
The intern will have the opportunity to learn how data management and science informs the implementation of our national environmental laws and will become familiar with the processes and procedures used to implement national regulatory programs. He/she will have the opportunity to learn a range of technical topics in some or all of the following areas: conducting research, drafting research summaries, communicating and outreach efforts, technical data management and developing policy options.
The intern will be trained by a team of analytical, technical and legal staff who support NPDES analysis and regulation, pollution abatement, outreach and environmental management. The intern could also have the opportunity to interact with EPA Headquarters and Regional colleagues, other federal agencies staff, state staff, and representatives of industry, academia and non-profit organizations.
The internship will provide the intern with an understanding of the intricate workings of the NPDES and related Clean Water Act programs.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Applicants must have received a master’s in environmental science, public policy, engineering, or related field within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Knowledge of the Clean Water Act, nutrient pollution, agriculture and/or wastewater treatment is desirable.
The appointment is full-time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend range will be $53,435. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
