A postgraduate research training opportunity is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water (OW). This appointment will be served with the Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds, Oceans & Coastal Protection Division, in Washington, DC.
The intern will be involved with research and development of a methodology that coastal managers can use to apply sustainability concepts in support of a program of climate change adaptation and trained in the research and development of G.I.S. models to identify the best places in the nation’s estuaries to implement innovative responses to sea level rise. The intern will learn about how climate change adaptation is being implemented in the U.S. and internationally, and will be involved with publicizing that information. This oppurtunity will provide excellent exposure to a broad range of environmental and policy issues pertaining to estuarine and coastal protection, and provide an opportunity for interaction with EPA and other senior-level federal agency decision-makers and stakeholders. The participant will also have the opportunity to learn about the role of federal, state and local governments in coastal management and climate change adaptation, and about the interaction between the various levels of government and the private sector.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Applicants should have received a master’s or doctoral degree in environmental science, environmental and marine sciences, ecology, geographic information systems, ecology, communications, or related field within five years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date. Basic G.I.S. skills will enhance this training opportunity.
The appointment is full-time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend range will be commensurate with the level of education. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
