A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of the Associate Director for Policy (OADP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The OADP is the nexus for CDC’s policy activities and its vision is to use policy to create a healthier world. Its mission is to identify and advance opportunities to use policy and leverage health system transformation and other sectors to improve the public’s health. OADP’s priorities are to: 1) Identify highly effective prevention and public health policies and interventions; 2) Increase understanding and use of credible evidence of prevention’s impact by policy makers, health care and the business community; 3) Help public health, health care and other sectors interact together, with special focus on opportunities expanded by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the following activities:
- Assisting senior staff within the Policy Research Analysis and Development Office (PRADO) on assessing approaches to advancing public health priorities through public health-health care partnering.
- Researching laws and other policies that impact the public’s health, and prepare reports and products.
- Analyzing policy issues and developing policy issue briefs and reports.
- Tracking and monitoring current activities related to health system transformation and the Affordable Care Act.
- Supporting internal and external partners on collaborative efforts bridging public health and health care system organizations.
- Reviewing and assessing the effectiveness of current public health policies and determining where new or changed policies are required to effectively execute public health programs, missions, and functions.
- Supporting internal and external partners to define and exploit opportunities to maximize population health gains across the nation.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
- Doctoral or master’s degree in health policy, public health, health services research, or behavioral science research, or a related field, received within the past five years.
- Prior experience conducting program evaluation, policy analysis, public health research, or health services research is preferred.
