A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. The internship will be served with the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW) in the Water Security Division (WSD).
The Water Laboratory Alliance (WLA) is a nationwide network of analytical laboratories that serves the water sector. This network helps water utilities and laboratories respond to incidents involving chemical, biological and radiochemical contamination. The participant will learn about resources developed to enhance the nation’s ability to provide adequate analytical and technical support in response to water contamination incidents. The participant will research opportunities to improve the ability of the WLA to support the water sector’s preparedness and incident response efforts. This will involve exploring the development of technical documents, tools and resources and collaboration with representatives from other federal agencies.
The participant will gain experience by observing the ways federal agencies design and manage projects, conduct strategic planning and develop technical guidance and training to enhance the water sector’s preparedness and response capabilities.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Applicants must have received a master’s or doctoral degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science, physical science, environmental engineering and public health. A background in computer science and information technology is desired.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
