A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. The internship will be served with the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW) in the Water Security Division (WSD).
The participant will be trained within the Security Assistance Branch (SAB) to develop, use, and promote tools and documents to help water/wastewater utilities become more resilient to and recovery from disasters.
This project will provide exposure to a range of environmental policy issues involving technical issues/topics of emergency preparedness.
The participant will have the opportunity to contribute to technical publications, learn how EPA implements a variety of non-regulatory, voluntary programs, and develop an understanding how disasters can disrupt water and wastewater utility operations.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Applicants must have received a bachelor's degree in biological or physical science, enginnering, environmental policy, or other closely related field within five years of the start date, or have completed all degree requirements prior to the start date. Emergency preparedness, response, and recovery experience and knowledge with water utilities are desirable.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The annual stipend will be up to $43,684. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
