A postgraduate internship project is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Water in Washington, DC. The internship will be served with the Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water (OGWDW) in the Water Security Division (WSD).
The participant will learn about resources developed to enhance the nation’s ability to provide adequate analytical and technical support in response to water contamination events. The participant will gain experience developing technical documents for the water sector that will focus on the remediation and clean-up phase following a contamination incident. These documents will support the Water Security Division’s Decontamination Strategy, a multi-year effort that helps utilities prepare, detect, respond and recover from a contamination incident. The participant will communicate with other federal agencies, such as Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Water Sector regarding on a variety of decontamination topics.
The participant will gain experience in project design, strategic planning, project management, technical guidance construction, and in the development of tools and training needed to promote the water sector’s preparedness and response strategies.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA.
Applicants must have received a master's or doctoral degree in environmental or civil engineering, biology, environmental science, or emergency management within five years of the starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected prior to the starting date.
The appointment is full time for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of EPA and contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. Funding may be made available to reimburse the participant’s travel expenses to present the results of his/her research at scientific conferences. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or participant’s health insurance. The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. The participant does not become an EPA employee.
