Description

A fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Region IV, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

OASH Region IV encompasses the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky. This project will focus on the Let’s Move Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC) Program, the Tobacco-Free College Campus Initiative (TFCCI) Implementation Project, Million Hearts (MH), the National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO).

The fellow will gain experience by:

LMCTC: Supporting local elected officials in their efforts to address the policy and environmental factors that contribute to childhood obesity; identifying the most effective strategies for recruiting local elected officials to participate in the initiative; and providing  assistance to support those local elected officials.

TFCCI: Promoting and supporting the adoption and implementation of tobacco-free policies at universities, colleges and other institutions of higher learning across Region IV states

MH: Translating and diffusing knowledge, which may include developing and disseminating messages to key stakeholders and identifying and sharing best practices to encourage adoption and scale up; and activating stakeholders, which may include establishing formal partnerships, supporting the development and execution of MH plans, and facilitating collaborations among stakeholders

NVPO: Supporting efforts related to the National Vaccine Program Office

Through this fellowship, the selected participant will learn to: identify and disseminate effective recruitment and technical assistance strategies for engaging local government in DHHS efforts to address childhood obesity and prevent heart attacks and strokes; identify and disseminate effective implementation and technical assistance strategies for engaging academic institutions in DHHS efforts to implement tobacco-free campuses; and share lessons learned with federal and non-federal entities interested in engaging local elected officials, academic institutions and other stakeholders for all projects.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DHHS. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of DHHS contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at HHS in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of DHHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

Qualifications

A master’s degree in public health or a related field received within the last five years. Experience with community outreach and partnership development preferred.
