A postgraduate appointment is available at the U.S. Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNW) in Portland, OR. Research has been part of the Forest Service mission since the agency's inception in 1905. Today, over 500 Forest Service researchers work to develop the knowledge and tools that are needed to address the challenges in the management of our Nation’s diverse forests and rangelands. PNW is headquartered in Portland but provides research throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska Regions.
The participant selected for this project will support science communication efforts for both internal and external audiences. The participant will help develop research syntheses on a diversity of topics (e.g., northwest forest planning, climate change, urban, wildlife, watershed, recreation, and fire research) and help share this information through website content development, briefing papers, managing SharePoint content, and workshops and webinars. The participant will report to the Assistant Director for Program Development, and would be supported and mentored by a strong research and communications team.
This appointment offers a unique opportunity to participate in the research branch of a federal land management agency with an extensive network of connections across other agencies and partners. The participant will learn about research planning and management and build skills in science delivery, public relations, communications, stakeholder engagement and outreach. In addition, the participant will participate with station scientists from a wide variety of disciplines and could have the opportunity to explore graduate or post-graduate research opportunities.
The appointment will be in the PNW headquarters in Portland, OR.
Participant Benefits
The annual stipend is dependent on experience (range $40,000-60,000/per year) plus health benefits and a travel/training budget. The appointment is full-time (but 50-75% time is an option) for one year and may be extended based on performance and funding availability.
Housing, transportation and relocation costs will not be paid. Taxes and other federal, state, and local deductions are the responsibility of the participant. The participant must show proof of health insurance. Health insurance is available through Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). If the participant selects coverage under the ORISE policy, a supplement to the stipend may be provided to offset a portion of this expense.
Nature of the Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, USFS, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
