• Selected faculty and participating students spend 10 weeks (Summer Term) at a DOE national laboratory engaged in a research project under the guidance of a laboratory scientist.
• Faculty members build collaborative relationships with DOE research scientists, become familiar with DOE sponsored research programs, scientific user facilities, and potential funding opportunities.
• Students participate in enrichment activities, including career professional development workshops (e.g. technical and scientific writing skills development, poster, or oral presentation activities, etc.), laboratory tours, scientific lectures and seminars.
• Host laboratories may provide laboratory tours, scientific lectures and seminars, workshops on accessing DOE scientific user facilities.
• Host laboratories provide all required site specific training.

Financial Support:

• Participating faculty receive a 10-week stipend of $15,000 during the internship period.
  Participating faculty are reimbursed for one round trip domestic travel to the host laboratory (if permanent address is more than 50 miles from the host laboratory). Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Travel by a private automobile will be reimbursed at the current government rate up to a maximum of $500.00 or the cost of the lowest commercial airfare, whichever is lower. Travel by air will be reimbursed at the cost of the lowest commercial airfare. Housing information will be provided to visiting faculty prior to arrival at the host laboratory. In general, housing opportunities will vary from laboratory to laboratory. An allowance is available for visiting faculty placed at host laboratories that are unable to offer direct housing arrangements.
• Participating undergraduate students receive a stipend of $650 per week during the internship period.
  Participating undergraduate students are reimbursed for one round trip domestic travel to the host laboratory (if permanent address is more than 50 miles from the host laboratory). Transportation expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of the most direct route. Faculty Applicants:

• Must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien at the time of applying.
  Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien status will be requested at the time an appointment offer is accepted. Acceptable form of proof of U.S. Citizenship includes, but is not limited to, a Certified Birth Certificate, an U.S. State Government Issued Enhanced Drivers License, U.S. Passport, U.S. Passport Card, Naturalization Certificate, Certificate of Citizenship, Consular Report of Birth (of U.S. citizen) Abroad, or Certification of Birth. Permanent Resident Aliens must hold an active United States Permanent Resident Card.
• Must be a full-time faculty member at an accredited U.S. degree granting, postsecondary, institution of higher education historically underrepresented in the U.S. research community. To be eligible, the applicant cannot be a faculty member at a Doctoral-Granting University assessed as being either Research Universities (RU/VH) - very high research activity (84KB), or Research Universities (RU/H) - high research activity (67KB) as determined in the 2010 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education™ less any institution also listed as an Historically Black College or University (HBCU); i.e. full-time faculty members at any HBCU are eligible. (Please note - On October 8, 2014, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching transferred responsibility for the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education to Indiana University Bloomington's Center for Postsecondary Research. For the 2015 Summer Term, VFP-Faculty eligibility is based on the 2010 classification.)
• Must be a full-time faculty member in an area of physics, chemistry, biology (non-medical), mathematics, engineering, environmental sciences, materials sciences, or computer or computational sciences.

Undergraduate Student Applicants:

• Must be invited to participate by the applying faculty member.
• Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
• Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in an area of science, mathematics, engineering, or technology at the same university/college as the applying faculty member.
• Must have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate student.
• Must have an undergraduate cumulative minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all completed courses as a matriculating student.
• Must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien at the time of applying.

Graduate Student Applicants:

• Must be invited to participate by the applying faculty member.
• Must be 18 years or older at the time the appointment begins.
• Must be currently enrolled as a full time graduate student in qualified Masters or Ph.D. program in an area of science, mathematics, engineering, or technology at the same university/college as the applying faculty member.
• Must have completed at least one semester as a matriculating graduate student.
• Must have a graduate cumulative minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all completed courses as a matriculating graduate student.
• Must be a United States Citizen or Permanent Resident Alien at the time of applying.
