A fellowship opportunity is available in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion’s (ODPHP) Division of Health Care Quality within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health (OASH), Office of the Secretary (OS), at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in Rockville, MD. The participant will gain professional experience in a health policy setting.
OASH provides leadership to the nation on public health and science matters, and communicates on these subjects to the American people. OASH is a Staff Division in HHS that performs both policy and program roles and is led by the Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH), whose chief mission is promoting, protecting, and improving the nation’s health. ODPHP has been leading the alignment of disease prevention and health promotion activities across the department for more than 30 years. Within ODPHP, the Health Care Quality Division coordinates departmental efforts to reduce preventable adverse health care-associated conditions, most notably health care-associated infections (HAIs) and adverse drug events (ADEs). Recently, the division has undertaken research aimed at reducing racial/ethnic and other disparities (e.g., geographical, health literacy, primary language, socioeconomic status) in preventable adverse health care-associated outcomes, including HAIs, ADEs and 30-day readmissions. The Research Participation Program for HHS is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The appointment is for one year and may be renewed upon recommendation of HHS and subject to availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time in the Rockville, MD, area. Participants do not become employees of HHS or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
A medical degree, PhD/DrPH, MPH, or a closely related field received within the last five years. Applicants with a Bachelor’s degree received within the last five years are also encouraged to apply, provided they have relevant public health academic or work experience in addition to the degree.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a public health environment and experience in improving health care quality.
