A fellowship opportunity is currently available with the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response (OPHPR) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.
The research participant will perform research as part of public health preparedness and response for the Career Epidemiology Filed Office (CEFO) Program. She/he will collaborate with CEFO staff to strengthen the CEFO Program network, visibility, and scientific contributions to OPHPR and public health preparedness. The participant will assist and/or coordinate scientific reporting and communication activities that will strengthen networking among CEFOs, enhance collaboration between the CEFO Program and other parts of OPHPR, and increase visibility of CEFO work and accomplishments within CDC and among external partners and organizations. Participant activities may include but are not limited to:
- CEFO Quarterly Reporting system.
- Summarization of information from the reports.
- Coordinating a quarterly newsletter that includes program updates and reviews to distribute to CEFOs and other stakeholders.
- Developing and disseminating an annual summary report that highlights CEFO accomplishments.
- Core Competency Assessments among all CEFOs to determine current skill level of field staff and training needs.
- Developing a plan for CEFO career progression opportunities.
- Developing a CEFO training plan.
- Evaluation of the effectiveness of newly developed SOPs (e.g., Clearance, CEFOs as supervisors, EOC Communication).
- Assisting in an evaluation of the impact that CEFOs have on improving the effectiveness of health departments.
- Developing a model for what constitutes a successful CEFO assignment.
- Developing standards for qualifications to be a CEFO.
- Assisting in the development of a formal process for CEFOs to request assistance from subject matter experts at CDC or in other health departments.
- Statistical methods/analytic support.
- Reverse site visits.
- Site visits to other states.
- Preparing and maintaining high level briefing documents on CEFO involvement in national public health emergencies and responses.
- Summarize CEFO response efforts and coordinate CEFO Program after action reports.
- Coordinate CEFO scientific conference calls.
- Opportunities to travel to the field and assist CEFOs with one or more epidemiology or preparedness projects might be available and will be offered to interested fellows.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.
- MPH or equivalent degree earned within the past five year
- Strong analytic skills (SAS, STATA, Excel).
- Experience working in or with state or local health departments, particularly programs with a heavy emphasis on epidemiology and/or public health preparedness, is desired.
- Degree: Master's Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
