The U.S. Army Public Health Center’s (APHC) Behavioral and Social Health Outcomes Practice (BSHOP) examines and assesses the relative impact of psychological and social threats using scientifically rigorous methodology and surveillance in order to maximize total Soldier health and combat readiness. https://phc.amedd.army.mil/organization/cphe/Pages/BSHOP.aspx

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will contribute to data quality assurance processes related to public health projects. They will participate in the development of deliverables for public health studies, surveillance, monitoring, field studies, and program evaluation projects. Specifically, the participant will analyze large data sets such as medical claims, military administrative data sources, and behavioral and social health data systems for research topics that include: substance use disorders, suicidal behavioral, and sexual assault.

During the appointment, the participant will learn to plan and execute behavioral health surveillance and monitoring using standard SAS capabilities and will further learn to use SQL to provide quality assurance for the program's surveillance projects. They will gain knowledge on how to work with a team to design analytic project plans that minimize epidemiological problems and increase quality control. They will become familiar with quantitative, qualitative and social science research techniques and will gain knowledge to develop and execute complex, mixed methods, retrospective and prospective research projects.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APHC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Additional Information

While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

The participant must have a Master's degree.

SQL proficiency and the ability to analyze data and solve data problems, specifically determining relationships within data, is required.
