USGS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) within the USGS Climate Adaptation Science Center (CASC) network, specifically the regional North Central CASC located in Boulder, Colorado, and the Northwest CASC located in Seattle, Washington. Regional CASCs support and produce science to inform on-the-ground climate adaptation planning by natural and cultural resource managers. The selected candidate can report remotely, however, preference will be given to candidates located in, or willing to relocate to, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, or Washington.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) mission is to monitor, analyze, and predict current and evolving dynamics of complex human and natural Earth-system interactions and to deliver actionable intelligence at scales and timeframes relevant to decision makers. As the Nation's largest water, earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, USGS collects, monitors, analyzes, and provides science about natural resource conditions, issues, and problems.

Research Project: The objective is to develop a plan for and conduct stakeholder engagement across Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas in support of five separate USGS projects examining the eco-hydrologic impacts of climate change. Stakeholder engagement is central to the CASC mission of delivering actionable science to resource managers. Intentional design of such engagement helps researchers and the management community better understand decision contexts, identify information needs, and better design research efforts.

Under the guidance of a mentor, specific activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with North Central and Northwest Climate Adaptation Science Center-sponsored investigators to ensure that research is responsive to stakeholder climate adaptation management priorities
  • Conduct initial research into the most appropriate structure for engagement efforts
  • Partner with a collaborative team of experts to design and execute an engagement plan
  • Carry out a series of engagement activities, including logistics
  • Produce summaries of engagement outcomes and other relevant project information
  • Produce management briefs, synthesis documents, and other outreach materials to communicate research project activities and findings to a variety of audiences

Learning Objectives: The selected participant will have the opportunity to co-lead the development of engagement workshops and unstructured interviews, refine their knowledge of eco-hydrologic sciences, better understand the needs of the natural resource management community, engage with federal and non-federal partners, and gain valuable experience being a part of a partnership-driven program within a federal science agency.
