Description

The Center for Integrated Forest Science (CIFS) seeks an ORISE Research Fellow (orise.orau.gov/science-education/internships-scholarships-fellowships) in Watershed Modeling and GIS.  The CIFS is a research unit within the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station and is developing new research approaches that are more integrated and conducted at larger scales.  The Center’s goal is develop and implement innovative research approaches that provide timely, relevant, and credible science to natural resources managers and policy makers. The incumbent will participate in ongoing team-oriented research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances.  Research opportunities include, but are not limited to the application of watershed modeling (e.g., using available models such as SWAT), GIS, and landscape-scale analyses to assess the impacts of land use and climate change on water resources.

Qualifications

Strong candidates for the position will have: (1) academic training in watershed modeling and GIS at the M.S. level, and (2) knowledge and skill in quantitative analyses of large and complex data sets. The incumbent will participate in ongoing team-oriented research focused on understanding responses of watershed ecosystems to anthropogenic and natural disturbances.

The position is for one-year, part time - 25 hours per week. The pay rate is equivalent to an annual stipend of approximately $39,000. A limited amount of travel funding for attendance at scientific meetings is also available.  The anticipated start date is March 1, 2017.
