Are you ready to learn how to build tools that will provide our Nation with the accurate, reliable information we need to measure the accessibility and connectivity of the transportation network to our communities?  Do you want to aid DOT, planning agencies, and researchers in doing a far better job of demonstrating the importance and role of transportation equity in American society?  Do you want to help identify and address gaps in access to opportunity?    Take an appointment with our team and learn how to analyze the impact of the transportation system on connecting people in underserved communities to opportunity.   This research project and developmental opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation.  The appointment will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics in Washington, DC as an Equity Data Analysis Fellow.

Who are we?  The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's research programs and is charged with advancing rigorous analysis and the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation's transportation system. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics is the Principal Federal Statistical Agency that provides objective, comprehensive, and relevant information on the extent and use of the Nation’s transportation system, how well the system performs, and the effects of the system on society and the environment. The appointed Equity Data Analysis Fellow must be currently enrolled in, or have received, a Bachelor's Degree, Master’s Degree or Ph.D. program in a relevant field, (preferably in Geography, Social or Behavioral Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Math or Statistics, Earth or Geo Science, Life, Physical or Environmental Science, Engineering, Business, Data Science, Data Visualization).

Preferred Skills:

• Demonstrated experience in data visualization – dashboards (tableau, R shiny, etc.)
• Demonstrated experience in GIS and spatial mapping  - experience with common tools QIS, Mapbox, Open Streetmaps
• Demonstrated experience with R or Python
• Demonstrated experience linking various socio-economic, health, and transportation datasets
• Strong written and verbal communications skills
• A self-starter with the ability to perform work with limited supervision and changing outcome goals
• Knowledge of and interest in U.S. transportation systems
• Experience presenting results in a clear, effective, and attractive manner to inform next steps
• Proficiency translating high level business requirements into detailed design specifications
• Ability to work across various offices and work units to obtain information, collaborate on data-related projects, and validate findings and conclusions
