USDA Forest Service Office/Lab and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) within the Pacific Southwest Research Station (PSWRS) located in Arcata, California.

Research Project: Joining the Ecological and Watershed Research Scientists at the Redwood Science Laboratory, the selected participant will be offered an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and skills in data archiving, data management, ecological instrumentation, and library science relating to ecological data and research produced by the Pacific Southwest Research Station of the USDA Forest Service. The participant will participate in projects on data archiving, library collection, and scholarly communication.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, opportunities to gain skills and experience may include:
- Developing and maintaining data archiving systems and data science products.
- Learning and implementing principles of federal records management and federal data archiving standards.
- Experience learning about different types of ecological and scientific instrumentation.
- Applying principles of library science to ecological knowledge systems and to forms of scholarly communication.
- Providing technical support to the cataloging team.
- Receive support from experienced mentors.
As information systems evolve rapidly, the participant will also have the opportunity to collaborate with PSW Research teams on new data projects and initiatives as they arise.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November/December 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for 9 months but may be extended upon recommendation of USDA Forest Service and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is part time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USDA Forest Service. Participants do not become employees of USDA, USDA Forest Service, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields (e.g. biological science, library science, and/or data and information science)
Preferred skills:
- Coursework and/or experience in library or information science.
- Experience with data archiving or data management.
- Exposure to ecological field data collection (although this fellowship will not include field work).
- Demonstrated ability to meet established deadlines.
- Experience presenting results in a clear and effective manner to inform next steps.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to collaborate across various teams to obtain information and to collaborate on data-related projects.
- A self-starter with the ability to perform with limited supervision and changing outcome goals.
