ARS Office/Lab and LocationA postdoctoral research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory located in Beltsville, Maryland. 

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. Research Project: The overall goal of this engineering project is to develop nondestructive sensing-based tools and techniques to reduce food safety risks in preharvest and post-harvest production and processing. This project will focus primarily on safety and quality inspection using spectral imaging techniques such as fluorescence, reflectance, and Raman, for authentication of food ingredients and detection of food contaminants, improvement of cleaning and sanitation efficacies in food processing facilities, and pre-harvest in-field detection of animal fecal contamination. 

Learning ObjectivesUnder the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be involved in the following activities: 

  • Learn and apply hyperspectral fluorescence, reflectance, and Raman imaging technologies for safety and quality evaluation of agricultural products
  • Learn Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence methods to evaluate hyperspectral image data to assess safety and quality attributes of agricultural products
  • Contribute to the development of sensing and instrumentation methods and technologies for rapid safety and quality inspection of agricultural products
  • Participate in the design and development of image-based food safety and quality inspection system for applications in bulk-processing environments
  • Present these results at scientific conferences and publish the results of these projects in peer-reviewed scientific journals

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: October 2023.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment LengthThe appointment will initially be for two years, but may be extended upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of ParticipationThe appointment is full-time.

Participant StipendThe participant(s) will receive an annual stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE InformationThis program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in agricultural or mechanical engineering. 

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  •  A broad understanding of mechanical and agricultural, as well as optical and spectroscopic imaging and machine learning techniques for agricultural food product evaluations, is desired.
