ARS Office/Lab and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the Appalachian Fruit Research Station located in Kearneysville, West Virginia.

Research ProjectThis project focuses on the development of monitoring and management tools for the invasive spotted lanternfly  The opportunity will be located at the Appalachian Fruit Research Station, whose mission is to conduct fundamental, applied, and developmental research associated with temperate fruit production. The intern will participate in research conducted in established quarantine zones or a quarantine laboratory and learn how to rear insects, design experiments in both the lab and field, and develop a deeper understanding of issues surrounding invasive species. 

Learning ObjectivesThe participant will be provided opportunities to learn about insects and invasive pests in relation to temperate fruit research from experienced ARS scientists. The participant will also be give the opportunity to participate in regional meetings and outreach events.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Summer/Fall 2021.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment(s) will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in one of the relevant fields.

Preferred skills: 

  • Experience participating in research in either a lab or field setting
  • Computer skills, including use of Word, Excel and Powerpoint
