ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Tropical Crop and Commodity Protection Research Unit located in Hilo, Hawaii.
Research Project: In keeping with the mission and goals of the Tropical Crop and Commodity Protection Research Unit, the participant will participate in the design, implementation, and analysis of data pertaining to understanding the factors contributing to, or limiting, effective pest management of invasive tephritid fruit flies in the Pacific Basin, and developing solutions to address limitations where they exist. This includes identifying whether differences in geographical and climatic factors, or landscape phenology and community structure, affect tephritid establishment and persistence. Under the guidance of a mentor, specific activities will include experimental design and implementation of research projects in the lab and field, data analysis using statistical software such as R, and preparation of scientific manuscripts relevant to the research conducted during the term of the appointment.
Learning Objectives: The participant will have opportunities to develop advanced research design and data analysis skills, collaborate with researchers at various institutions, attend meetings with growers, present at professional society meetings, and publish in leading peer-reviewed journals. These opportunities will allow the participant to develop valuable scientific research experience in insect ecology and applied pest management in a wide range of crop and landscape systems.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment(s) will initially be for two years but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) and foreign nationals. Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
