ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research Unit (SGPGRU) located in Aberdeen, Idaho. ARS is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.
Research Project: The potato breeding project goal is to produce improved potato germplasm and varieties with emphasis on the predominant market class for the western U.S. which is characterized by long tubers and russet skin. Improved varieties will be suitable for potato processing, as well as fresh consumption. Potato virus Y and potato cyst nematode reduce potato yield and quality. This project seeks to discover resistant sources to these pests and incorporate those sources into useable germplasm and new varieties.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant for this opportunity will gain knowledge regarding conventional breeding and use of molecular tools that allow discovery of resistant genetic sources to be used in a conventional breeding program. Potential skills to be obtained will include phenotyping for virus and nematode resistance as well as testing techniques for detecting this pathogen and pest.
Mentor(s): The mentor for this opportunity is Jonathan Whitworth (jonathan.whitworth@usda.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research please contact the mentor(s).
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Winter 2020. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
