The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs.

One ORISE research opportunity is available with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, MA. The primary focus of this research fellowship will involve research examining the effects of non-invasive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on military job task performance, specifically marksmanship performance. The Fellow may also have opportunities to gain diverse experience with human research studies investigating the effects of military occupational (e.g., physical/cognitive exertion) and environmental (e.g., heat, cold, altitude) exposures on physical, cognitive, and psychological performance. This research includes primarily laboratory-based studies, but may also include field-based studies.

This opportunity includes, but is not limited to, the following:

TENS administration and data collection, administration of cognitive assessments and marksmanship tasks, collection of biological samples, data organization and database management, data analysis, preparation of documents for administrative/regulatory review and approval, recruitment and scheduling of study participants, preparation of scientific presentations and scholarly manuscripts (such as conducting literature searches, creating figures, and editing text)

Appointment Length

This opportunity is scheduled for twelve months and has the option to be renewed for additional terms. 

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment

USARIEM is seeking candidates with Bachelor's or Master's degree in the biological sciences, psychology, neurosciences, or a related field.

Experience with project coordination is desirable.

U.S. citizenship is required.
