The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is offering a postdoctoral research opportunity.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to identify risk factors for injury among Soldiers, develop interventions for injury prevention, and ultimately improve Warfighter health and performance. You will have the opportunity to study risk factors for musculoskeletal injury, particularly bone stress injury/stress fracture, as well the impact of sleep, reproductive hormones, hormonal contraceptives, and biomarkers of oxidative stress on bone adaptation and musculoskeletal injury resulting from exercise.

What is the anticipated start date?
Approximate start date is 6/1/2022. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM
The US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine is a state-of-the-art facility that specializes in optimizing health and performance of the Warfighter. The 50-year old+ Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, health, performance and nutrition research. Research studies are conducted by scientists from three research divisions, working in concert with one another, as well as in collaboration with other world-class scientists from government, industry and academia. Research divisions are: Military Nutrition (MND), Military Performance (MPD) and Thermal & Mountain Medicine (TMMD).

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate must have a Doctoral degree, or will receive a Doctoral degree by August 2022.
Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge, skills and qualities:
- Experience in exercise science/kinesiology/biology or a related field (preferably for prior experience in hormone analysis, bone imaging and/or human physiology)
- Experience in data dissemination through published manuscripts and/or conference presentations
- Self-motivation and able to function well within a collaborative laboratory environment
- Experience in data management and analysis
- Experience in managing research regulatory applications and processes
